Semmelweiss University (SUH), Hungary
Semmelweis University Heart and Vascular Center is an interventional cardiology center with substantial diagnostic capabilities and expertise in different diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Among these, are coronarography and coronary interventions, electrophysiology (catheter-based examination and treatment of different arrhythmias by different ablation techniques), as well as implantation of different kinds of pacemakers and defibrillators. It also has capabilities in invasive cardiology and electrophysiology interventions, completed echocardiography (3D), CT and MR exams, exercise stress test and 24-hour Holter monitoring. Clinical research is supported by the experimental research laboratory. The research activity of the laboratory aims better understanding of patomechanisms of several types of cardiovascular diseases; testing of new medicaments, investigative techniques, operative procedures, and equipment, especially in the field of invasive cardiology, electrophysiology and cardiovascular surgery; training of researchers in broad areas of cardiovascular sciences.
On the electrophysiologic department, large number of interventions has been performed – yearly ca. 900 electrophysiology studies, 700 ablation procedures – 300 atrial fibrillation ablation, 1600 pacemaker implantation – 250 ICD, 300 biventricular. The experimental electrophysiologic lab is one of the most qualified Hungarian workshops in the following fields of cardiovascular research: autonomic regulation of the cardiovascular system; pacemaker and defibrillator systems development; testing ablation-techniques, alterations in humoral and metabolic regulatory processes in different cardiovascular diseases; pathophysiology of myocardial ischaemia and cardioprotection.
